a part of my life

i think it prudent to explain my philosophy of music
ministry. The steps by which i've come to these conclusions so far has
been a clarifying process for me and i wanted to share my thoughts so
we could more likely understand each other.
- Music is an integral part of Christian worship (Psalm
149; 150)
- Praise and worship should utilize any and all
instruments/voices available (see historical context for above
verses)
- Music is an integral part of teaching Christian
values (Ephesians 5:19;
Colosians 3:16)
- Music is an important salve in working out
relationships with others and expressed to God (look at the chapter
context of the above verses: how to live in specific relationships)
- Music is a metaphor (both imagined and expressed) of
a deep encounter with God's grace and His (re)creation (Job
38:7; Exodus 15; Numbers 21:16-17; Mark 14:26; Acts 16:25;
Revelation 14:3; Revelation 15:3)
- The Worship Experience should be multi-modal in
approach. In other words, incorporate as much as possible multiple learning
modes and personality styles as
possible. Notice that the worship service established by GOD in the
Torah was Kinesthetic, Visual, Olfactory, Auditory, and even used
the sense of taste. GOD planned for it all. That is our example
- Finally, though i've spent years preaching and know
it's value is inestimable (Rom 10:14)
let me ask you to repeat the words of your favorite
3 sermons . . . Next, can you tell me
the lyrics of any 3 songs?
Music has staying power. Many times i find myself humming along in a
store to the "elevatorized" music before i'm even aware of it. From
my own personal experience: my junior year in high school was
difficult to say the least, and it was Christian Rock that brought
me around again more than a year later (yeah Petra & Sweet
Comfort Band!)
With this as a prologue i appreciate the significant
responsibility of a music program that will enliven, enlighten, and
embolden the young souls in our care. We want music that has a hook,
words that are worth remembering for years, and to play
it as transparently as possible. i would define that as "flawlessly
effacing": good enough to not distract others with mistakes,
engaging enough to be celebratory! That
is a fine line to be sure.
To that end i try to select songs that "grab" me in
some way. When i hear a catchy tune and words that speak to the issue
of God's holiness, our need of prayer, or a joyful celebration of the
Christian experience THAT will be a song that receives consideration.
Send me your ideas. i'll be glad to work out arrangements for stuff if
i can.
Thanks.
